The Story of Ruth
Dance is everywhere; you see dance shows on TV, YouTube, weddings, and even in the streets. I forget; however, dance has some healing qualities, then I remember the story of Ruth. She participates in our Sunday afternoon project dance class in Minnesota. It costs her about $15.00 for her to participate, it takes us about $1,200.00 to put on the program. But for Ruth, it’s been life changing.
Ruth is in her late sixties, her family has moved and gone. She’s alone. She’s alone in her community and she’s alone in her mind. Ruth suffers from major depression. Getting out of bed, feelings of hopelessness, persistent anxiety constantly haunts Ruth. She has to get to something or do something. And some days, some weeks, going to Project Dance is the only thing she has to look forward to. We love it when she shows up on Sundays and can participate with us in partner dances. We see that joy for life all over her. And on the days, she is not showing up, the joyful way that she does, she has a community of people looking out for her. USA Dance is a collaboration of 150 chapters across the country.
Every Chapter offers a project dance in their community. For people who are passionate about the joy, the beauty, the majesty of dance, it’s transforming. We have a small budget for a National organization of $750,000. But we have a quest to be there for anyone; Ruth, adults young and old, even Ruth’s grandchildren. We have a vision of spreading the social and physical health benefits of dance in every state, in every city, and becoming a multi-million-dollar organization.
If you would like to check out a dance weekend or event, go to a local USA Dance Chapter and you'll find a project dance near you.
