Candidate for President
I am asking for your support as I seek the role of President of USA Dance. I have the experience and skills necessary to be an effective President. I retired from Mayo Clinic in 2012. During my 33-year career I had many wonderful
opportunities, serving in several administrative roles including Chair of the Department of Human Resources and my final 15 years as the Chief Compliance Officer.
During my tenure as Chief Compliance Officer, I was a founding board member of the Health Care Compliance Association, a 501(c)(6) organization which is now the Society for Corporate Compliance and Ethics. I served on that board
for 9 years and was President in 2001.
I was President of the Rochester Airport Company (Rochester, MN) and served on the Metropolitan Airport Commission for the Minneapolis-St.Paul International Airport.
These experiences have instilled in me strong leadership skills, a consensus building approach to challenges, and a realization for the need to build effective teams. I approach problems looking for pragmatic solutions. I like
to think I am a better listener than talker.
This is my second time on the USA Dance Board (formerly Governing Council). I was appointed to the Senior-VP role in 2018 and elected to this position effective January 1, 2019. During this time I have come to appreciate and understand
the challenges facing USA Dance. I also realize the tremendous amount of time serving on the Board requires. I could not serve as an officer if I weren’t retired.
My experiences within USA Dance serving as president of the Southern Minnesota chapter of USA Dance, being a District Director, and competing, helps me to appreciate the diverse and many challenges facing USA Dance. Dancers,
and I use this term inclusively from our youth and collegiate athletes to our professionals, have many dance opportunities. We need to provide opportunities for all so they will choose USA Dance over other dance organizations.
My wife, Jill, and I started dancing about 20 years ago. After a couple of years, our instructor convinced us to enter a competition. This led to us now competing at USA Dance competitions. Each competition we attend is like
a mini-family reunion. We have made many friends through these competitions and our social dancing, and these have enriched our lives.
I believe that USA Dance provides opportunities for dancers of all ages and abilities to enjoy the physical, mental and social interactions that makes dance a life changing activity. We must work together to sustain and grow USA Dance.
Your next president should have experiences managing and working in diverse and complex organizations; be an effective board and committee leader; and, be an effective and engaging communicator. I believe I meet these expectations.
